Parents of kids with braces know that the first week can be overwhelming. It’s not just that they’re uncomfortable and their mouths feel like they’ve been stuffed full of cotton balls; it’s also the adjustment to life with braces. Here are some tips to help your child successfully navigate their first week with braces.

1. Help Your Kids Brush and Floss Like a Pro

Since braces can make it difficult for your child to do a thorough job of brushing, be sure to place extra emphasis on this important step. Remind them they don’t need to rush, and that taking their time will help them avoid mistakes such as forgetting to clean the inside surfaces of their teeth. It also helps if they brush after every meal, as well as in the morning and evening.

2. Get the Right Supplies

Your kids need to have an adequate supply of their preferred toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, and other accessories such as rubber bands. If they’re not properly stocked with these essentials, it can be extremely difficult for them to cultivate and maintain good oral hygiene while wearing braces. This can lead to an increased risk of cavities, plaque build-up, and gum disease.

3. Avoid Sticky, Sugary Snacks

Candy and other sticky, sugary foods can get stuck in the brackets and wires of braces. This not only causes discomfort and irritation but can lead to dangerous dental problems such as tooth decay and swollen gums. Remind your kids that it’s very important to avoid these types of snacks while wearing braces.

4. Bite Carefully

Your child may find it difficult to chew while wearing braces, especially at first. Please encourage them to eat more soft foods such as pasta, rice, mashed potatoes, and soup. They should also try cutting their meat into small pieces, chewing slowly and thoroughly before swallowing. This prevents food from getting lodged between brackets or caught on the bands.

5. Encourage Them to Maintain a Positive Attitude

It’s common for kids to feel self-conscious or embarrassed during their first few days with braces. Remind them that everyone goes through this phase at some point, and it usually passes quickly. Please encourage your child to maintain a positive attitude and be as self-assured as possible. Emphasize the amazing results they will see, as long as they take proper care of their braces.

Children and teens make up 75 percent of the 4 million people who wear braces in the United States today. By following these tips, you can help your child through their first week with braces and beyond. To learn more about kids’ braces and orthodontics, call us today!
