Are Braces or Invisalign Better?
Posted on January 24, 2023
According to the American Association of Orthodontics, kids and teens in America rely on braces every year, to adjust their teeth and bite. The number of American kids getting braces each year is well over three million. But is this still the best choice? Or is Invisalign the way to go? There are a few things to consider when making this big decision for your family. Here is a simple breakdown of the pros and cons of braces and Invisalign.
Cost
Generally, thanks to 3D printing technology Invisalign treatments are usually about the same price as traditional braces. Of course, there are several factors that might make each situation unique. For example, some kids will have a bite that requires more adjustment than Invisalign can address alone. Orthodontists may recommend a hybrid option of an Invisalign treatment with braces to finalize the bite, and this will add to the bill.
Effectiveness
After cost, this is likely the issue parents will want to know most about, and for good reason. Nobody wants to go through extensive orthodontal care if it’s not going to work. The good news is that Invisalign is effective for many patients. Your orthodontist will be able to discuss the specifics of your child’s dental complexity, lifestyle, and personality to determine whether Invisalign is a good option. Because Invisalign can be removed, the patient must be diligent about using it regularly and properly. In addition to this, some dental issues are so complex that braces are necessary. That will mean that an Invisalign treatment is not an option.
Aesthetic Impact
This is often the issue patients, particularly kids and teens, are most concerned about. Braces are hard to miss, as they stand out visually against white teeth. Invisalign, however, is much harder to see. Hands down, Invisalign wins when it comes to aesthetic impact, but if braces are necessary, it’s not the end of the world. A lot of people have made braces part of their overall aesthetic and had fun with it. Newer generations are even considering them a fashion statement!
