Which Orthodontic Treatment is Right for You?

Orthodontic treatment can improve the look and feel of your smile. It can correct alignment, overcrowding, overbite, and underbite issues. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, an estimated 50-75% of people could benefit from orthodontic treatment, so it’s important to find out which option suits you best.

1. Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of orthodontic treatment. Orthodontists use metal brackets, wires, and elastic bands to straighten your teeth over time. Metal braces are strong and durable. However, they’re more visible than other options. If your alignment or crowding issues are severe, it’s often the best option.

2. Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are also an option for aligning your teeth and they use the same components as metal braces, but with tooth-colored brackets that blend in more easily with your teeth. While ceramic braces can be less visible than metal braces, they may require more frequent visits to your orthodontist for adjustments.

3. Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign aligners are a popular option for people seeking an almost invisible way to straighten their teeth, without the need for metal braces or wires. Invisalign aligners are removable and comfortable, but you must wear them for 20-22 hours a day to achieve the desired results. This option is ideal for those looking for a discrete way to correct misalignment. If you have a job where you often interact with people, Invisalign might be the best choice for you.

4. Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are similar to traditional metal braces except that they’re placed on the back of the teeth, making them invisible when you smile. While lingual braces offer a more discreet form of orthodontic treatment and allow the owner to feel more confident through this process, they’re also more difficult to clean and maintain than other types of braces.

5. Retainers

Retainers are used after orthodontic treatment to keep your teeth in their newly-straightened position. Retainers can be removable or fixed and must be worn for a certain amount of time each day to be effective.

The best way to determine which orthodontic treatment is right for you is to consult with a qualified orthodontist. An orthodontist will be able to assess your individual needs and recommend the best course of action for you. Contact our office today for a consultation!
