Are You Making These Crucial Mistakes With Your Invisalign?

Invisalign is a proven orthodontic treatment option that can help you attain the smile of which you have always dreamed. To get the most out of your Invisalign treatment, there are certain things you should avoid. Keep reading to learn about some common mistakes people make while using Invisalign.

Eating and Drinking with the Device In

The first thing your orthodontist will do is give you guidelines on when to wear the device and when to take it out. The tray is prone to staining if it is exposed to food or liquid. Food can stick in the tray and, if it touches your teeth for prolonged periods, then it can contribute to tooth decay. Sugary drinks can also create a film on the tray that could contribute to odors, staining, or tooth decay.

Forgetting to Clean the Device

The Invisalign device needs to be cleaned regularly. Bacteria can grow on any surface. Since there is a lot of bacteria present in your mouth, you must clean the device regularly. You will be given instructions on how to clean aligners from your orthodontist. Follow these instructions carefully for the best results.

Taking the Device Out too Frequently

Once the device is created for your mouth, you will be given instructions on how often to wear it. To get the intended results, you must wear the device for the intended amount of time. If you take the device out too frequently, it will not be able to shift the teeth the way it should. You will get less than satisfactory results and your progress will be slowed. The only time you should take the device out is to eat, drink, play sports, brush your teeth, or clean the tray.

Using Toothpaste to Clean the Device

It is an easy mistake to make, thinking that you should use toothpaste to clean your device. However, this is not correct. You should not use toothpaste at all. The delicate material used to make the Invisalign device should be washed with warm soapy water and rinsed well.

Expecting Instant Results

Invisalign treatment is more gentle and less invasive than some other forms of orthodontic treatment. However, it will not fix your teeth overnight or even in a couple of months. Your orthodontist will give you an expected timeline. According to WebMD, orthodontists typically do three things: supervise dental growth, diagnose, and treat misaligned teeth and jaws, and perform orthodontic surgeries. So, no matter what happens during your treatment, it is important to trust your orthodontist and be patient during the process.
