3 Tips for Ensuring Your Teenagers Are Maintaining Their Oral Health

Orthodontics for teenagers is very useful to ensure that your teenager has and maintains healthy teeth well into adulthood. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, parents should schedule an evaluation for their child as soon as they see signs of an orthodontic problem, but no later than age seven. If you catch it too late, it’s still fixable in later years. However, don’t leave your teens’ oral health solely in their hands. As a parent, there are things you can do to make sure they practice good oral care.

1. Promote Good Eating Habits

Everything we eat and drink starts in our mouth. That means our teeth and gums are affected by the type of diet we have. It’s natural for kids and teens to crave sugar and to snack a lot. Your teenager should understand the dangers of overconsuming too much sugar, such as candy, soda, sugary coffee drinks, and more. Keep as many healthy snacks in the house as possible, such as fruit, vegetables, granola bars, and pretzels. Pack a healthy snack for your teen to take to school so they’re not tempted to use the school’s vending machine.

2. Schedule Regular Dental Visits

Healthy orthodontics for teenagers should involve regular visits to their primary dentist and orthodontist. The primary dentist will always check that the overall structure and health of the teeth are intact. They’ll check for and treat cavities, decay, and other underlying issues. Your local orthodontist will check that the teeth are coming in with the correct alignment and can recommend braces, nightguards, and other treatments as needed.

3. Discourage Tobacco Use

Unfortunately, many teens are tempted to begin smoking. They may cave in due to peer pressure from friends and to try to look cool. However, nicotine can have a devastating impact, not only on their oral health but on their overall health in general. It’s no secret that smoking can result in stained teeth and bad breath. It can also become a costly and addictive habit. In addition to smoking cigarettes, chewing tobacco is just as harmful. If you are a smoker, you can set a good example for your budding teen and do what you can to quit.

Give your teenager all the knowledge and support available to maintain healthy teeth and gums for the rest of their life.
