What Do You Do When the Invisalign Braces Come Off?

Invisalign is the preferred treatment when it comes to braces for adults. Braces for teens and adults are either traditional metal braces or Invisalign. The aesthetics of Invisalign is the biggest draw for most teens and adults who need braces. While it is recommended that any orthodontic issues are addressed early on in childhood at around the age of seven, that is not always possible. Often, teens and adults are looking for a solution to correct misalignments, close gaps, and correct bites. Invisalign braces are an excellent solution.

Depending on your individual needs, the Invisalign process can range from one to two years. However, that is not the end of the process. Braces for straight teeth require some follow-up care after the braces come off, whether you use Invisalign braces or traditional metal braces.

A Retainer

You will need to wear a retainer after you are done with the Invisalign braces. The name says it all. This device retains your teeth in their new position and keeps them from shifting back into the old position.

In some cases, you may have to wear the retainer for up to six months full time, then switch to night time only wear. In other cases, you can wear the retainer every other day and use it at night while you sleep.

Your orthodontist is the expert who will let you know what is going to be best for your teeth. Think of a retainer as orthodontic insurance. You put a lot of hard work in to get that beautiful straight smile, you do not want to risk losing all the gains.

Will I Have to Wear a Retainer Forever?

Many patients ask if they will have to wear a retainer forever, and the short answer is yes. Your teeth are constantly moving even though you can not feel it. They will shift back into their old position if given the opportunity.

On the upside of things, you will not have to be as diligent about your retainer as you were about your Invisalign trays. You can go a while without wearing the retainer but it is always best to remember to put it in at night while you sleep.

Maintain Your Results

If you love your results—which you likely will—and you want to keep the results, you will need to wear a retainer. Your orthodontist can discuss other options with you like a permanent retainer if you feel it may be difficult to be compliant with wearing the retainer.
