Important Questions to Ask Your Child’s Orthodontist

When your child needs orthodontic care, you don’t want to hesitate to have them see an orthodontist. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, an evaluation needs to be scheduled as soon as any signs of orthodontic issues are noted. That being said, you need to make sure that you’re seeing the right orthodontist for your family. Not only should your child’s orthodontist be competent and skilled, but they need to be able to work with your child as an individual as well. Here are some of the questions that you should ask your child’s orthodontist before making a commitment.

1. What Types of Braces Do You Offer?

Generally speaking, you’re probably seeing an orthodontist because your child needs braces. You need to make sure that you know exactly what types of options that your orthodontist’s office offers in that regard. While some children have no issue with traditional metal braces, older kids sometimes request Invisalign braces, as they aren’t outwardly visible. Though most orthodontists offer Invisalign braces (which function similarly to traditional braces) you shouldn’t assume that everyone does.

2. What Should My Child Expect from Braces?

You as a parent need to know how to prepare your child for braces, and your orthodontist needs to be able to explain what to expect to your child along with you. Typically, in addition to soreness, braces will also come with some dietary changes (foods like popcorn and sticky candies will likely need to be abstained from while your child has braces). The more informed you are, the better.

3. How Long Will Treatment Last?

It will help to know just how long your child will need to live with those braces. Typically, teeth alignment treatments will last anywhere from one to three years. But the longer the treatment lasts, the more upkeep the braces will require.

4. What Are My Financing Options?

Different orthodontic offices may offer different financing options. You’ll want to know exactly what your options may be before you commit to any kind of treatment.

There is nothing wrong with asking questions of your orthodontist before making a commitment. It’s always better to be aware. Call us today and we’ll happily answer any questions that you have.
