Common Signs You’re Not a Good Candidate for Invisalign

Invisalign’s removable, transparent aligners are popular for straightening teeth discreetly. Those who are able to use this type of orthodontic device report a high success and satisfaction rate. According to Sesame Communications, Invisalign has over a 96% patient satisfaction rate, but not everyone is an ideal candidate for this treatment. There are certain dental and orthodontic situations where Invisalign is not recommended. Reading along as an orthodontist explains some of the signs that you may not be a good candidate for this treatment.

Severe Crowding or Spacing

Invisalign works best when moving teeth at moderate distances. If you have extreme crowding or diastema, also known as large spaces, the required movement is likely beyond Invisalign’s capabilities. An orthodontist may instead recommend traditional braces that use wires to pull teeth into place, as this may be a better option.

Overbite or Underbite Issues

Invisalign is great for small bite alignment corrections. But if you have a substantial overbite or underbite that requires moving the jaw and chin, traditional braces or jaw surgery may be necessary. Invisalign has limits in fixing these complex alignment issues.

Rotated or Misplaced Teeth

If you have extremely rotated teeth that need to be turned significantly, or teeth pushed completely outside the dental arch back into place, Invisalign may not provide enough force. Traditional braces can better reposition these teeth.

Adolescents With New Teeth Coming In

Invisalign works great for adults and older teens. However, younger teenagers with incoming new teeth often still require traditional braces. As teeth shift during eruption, regular wire tightening allows realignment that Invisalign may not be able to provide.

Gum Disease or Dental Issues

Active gum disease, decay, implants, extractions or other dental issues might make your case too complex for Invisalign. These conditions are better addressed first before starting clear aligners.

Poor Compliance Habits

Invisalign’s removable nature requires diligent use and care. If you skip aligner wear or have compliance issues, your results will suffer. Braces may be better for those lacking motivation or responsibility.

Invisalign is an excellent treatment for mild to moderate alignment cases but it has limitations. Luckily, braces are still a tried-and-true effective option.
